The Water-Use program in Montana is an integral part of the the U.S. Geological Survey's National Water-Use Information Program. This Program is responsible for compiling and disseminating the nation's water-use data. National water-use information, which includes water-use estimates for the State of Montana, has been published every five years since 1950. The latest National publication is the U.S. Geological Survey Circular 1268, ESTIMATED USE OF WATER IN THE UNITED STATES IN 2000. Montana water use for 2000 is published as USGS Scientific Investigations Report 2004-5223.
General water-use information and data used to compile national
reports since 1985 are available from the

as irrigation or public-supply.
